And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If you shall without fail (and as if God can fail, really Jephthath)
deliver the children of Ammon into my hands, Then it shall be that whatsoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace shall surely be the Lord’s and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
(Judges 11 verses 30-36)

Jephthah vowed to God that if he were victorious in battle, whatsoever came through the doors of his house to meet him upon his return from battle, he will give to the Lord as a burnt offering. What did Jephthah think would come through his doors ? a piece of furniture ? his pet dog.

Guess who came out to meet him ? his daughter and she was his only child. Oops. He sure put his foot in his mouth on this one.

Jephthath tore his clothes in dismay and said `I have opened my mouth unto the Lord and I cannot go back’. Proverbs 6 in the Bible says `You are snared with the words of your mouth, you are taken with the words of your mouth’. Well, not only was Jephthath snared but he got his daughter snared too. Careless words spoken.

How often have we opened our mouths and spoken words we could not take back. Do we implicate others too with our foolish promises. The Book of Proverbs in the Bible has many warnings about that deadly but powerful little member - the tongue. Prov 21 says Whoso keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles (its in the plural).

I do not think for a moment that Jephthah intended to offer his daughter as a human sacrifice. If so he had a totally wrong idea of what God takes pleasure in. The Mosaic law strictly forbids human sacrifice. Now wait a minute you say. What about God asking Abraham to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Well, did God allow it to happen. Abraham’s was a test of faith, obedience and priorities. Priorities ? Yes priorities. God wanted to make it crystal clear to Abraham who his first love was. God or Isaac. Abraham made the right choice. He chose God and as a reward he got Isaac too.

We make the mistake of thinking silence is evidence of divine approval. After all, God did not tell Jephthath not to vow this vow.
God will never take away your choice. It does not mean that God approves of your offerings and sacrifices. Abel offered an animal. God was pleased. Cain offered fruit. God was not pleased.

We offer God some really stinky stuff. He probably goes `pooh, not your self righteous acts again. I am sick and tired of it.

Do not be rash with your vows. Do not be hasty to speak. Do not make foolish vows. God desires obedience, not burnt offerings and sacrifice.
The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven
John 6 v 41

The language of spiritual babies is mur-mur, mur-mur, just as much as newborn babies cry ma-ma, ma-ma.

Ever been to a football game where one of the team was boo-booed. Statistics reveal there is an increase of people booing their own teams. Well, the Jews mur-mured at Jesus because He said `I am the bread which came down from heaven’.

V43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, `murmur not’.

There is a physical heart condition called heart murmur and the two most common causes are narrowing of valves or leaky valves. This condition usually leads to heart disease. In most people, blood flows quietly through the heart. In others, this blood flow can be heard with a stethoscope as a heart murmur during a physical examination. Heart murmurs may come and go or vary in intensity from time to time.

While I make no claims to understanding the medical implications of heart disease, in the spiritual realm Jesus hears our heart murmurs voiced or unvoiced, when our minds narrow or we cannot contain the truth.

We lack understanding and are easily offended and just as in the physical condition, our spiritual murmurs may come and go or vary in intensity depending on the circumstances.

Even the disciples of Jesus murmured. V61 It was his, Jesus’ disciples that were offended because the flesh quickened and not the spirit. (v63) The flesh profits nothing. Notice he did not say the flesh profits something or a few things. It profits nothing, zero.

Fortunately our spiritual murmurs can be brought under the power of the Holy Spirit. Destroy every argument and lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God and bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

We must evaluate all our ideas, thoughts and viewpoints in the bright light of scripture and turn our murmurs into praisers.

Food for Thought

Then anwered the Jews and said unto him ‘say we not well that you are a Samaritan and has a devil’. John 8:48

You are a Samaritan…..The ultimate insult had been hurled at Jesus by the Jews. In John 7:20 The people said to Jesus `you have a devil…’ and the insults kept getting worse and in John 8:48 he was accused `you a Samaritan…. Imagine the scene with angry violent men tossing their heads and spitting this out at Jesus.

The Samaritans were a despised ethnic class. The Jews hated them and looked down on them because they were a mixed race and their customs and religious worship was different. They were considered an inferior race. In fact, so deep was their hatred that although the shortest route between Judea and Galilee was through Samaria, the Jews would prefer to take the longer route and go over the Jordan.

To the surprise of the disciples Jesus led them through Samaria when escaping enemy activity in Judea and even took time off to chat with a branded woman.

Carefully consider the reply that Jesus gave to the accusation – You are a Samaritan.` Jesus said `I have not a devil, but I honour my Father, and you do dishonour me’. He never said `I am not a Samaritan’. Why did he not refute the charge that he was a Samaritan. He could not because he never saw a Samaritan. He saw his own image.

Praise God for Jesus the bondage breaker. The Creator created the Samaritans too, every tribe, every tongue, every nation. The Samaritans were made in the image of God and were just as precious to the Father as anyone else. Race, colour, caste cannot separate us from the love of God.

Do you know that mankind is made in the image of God. ?

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither male nor female, and may I add Sinhalese nor Tamil, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28).

He is our peace who has broken down the secret middle wall of color, race, culture we have erected in our hearts. Let those ugly walls come tumbling down in the Name of Jesus. Enmity was nailed to the cross and Jesus reconciled us to our Heavenly Father. Jesus sees the color of love, speaks the language of love and his culture is love because God is Love. Every man, woman and child is made in the image of God yes, including that beggar on the street.

For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son Jesus, so that everyone who believes in Him will be saved.
